Where I'm from, it's common to have more than one ethnicity contribute to a city's collective growth and experience. The Bay Area and it's multi-cultural melting pot has always had its unique way of defining a collective consciousness through politics and pop culture. 
We grew up understanding that it was our acceptance and willingness to interact with each other that made our days more tolerable being that poverty and displacement was our common enemy. "Hyphy" was an era and is an emotion, not a movement. I, for one, think it was foolish of us to brand it as something that anyone can understand. It was our socio-economic hardships that became a recipe for resistance and activism. Diversity helps a march become as furious as a moshpit. Variety helps the potency of a sit-in become the parallel of a sideshow. What your differences ingrain in you can either game you or stain you. - W.U
